Effects in air:
Carbon dioxide:
Not the only harmful gas affecting our atmosphere
Methane has one third of the effect as carbon dioxide and it’s a bigger worry.
Also Nitrogen Trifluoride, seen less of a problem in the beginning starting to become another major one
Carbon dioxide remains the most important gas because of its huge levels and rapid growth.
Methane: where it comes from:
Landfills
Natural gas
Coal mining
Animal waste
Decaying plants: this is the biggest worry because there’s methane trapped in permafrost wetlands and the ocean floor, as the climate warms from CO2 emissions the methane gas is released speeding up the process of warming and thus releasing more methane. A lose -lose situation !!!!
Methane levels started rising in 2006 and from then on nearly jumped 28 million tons from June 2006 to October 2007
There is more than 5.6 billion tons of methane in the air now
Methane is more than 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
Carbon Trifluoride:
Thought to be a small problem
The gas is used as a cleaning agent during the manufacture of flat screen televisions, computer monitors and for thin-film solar panels.
Levels have quadrupled in the last decade
Only contribute .04 % of total global warming effects that man made carbon dioxide does from burning fossil fuels
nitrogen trifluoride is one of the more potent gases, thousands of times stronger at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.
