Information found from researching

For my I-Search research I chose climate change, cancer research developments and social networks. I didn’t know much about the topics when I started my research but now I feel I have found a significant amount of information about each. I’m really interested about all three and was excited to research my topics.
I broke climate change into the four different parts to research land, water, air and the changes we’re making. I found the effects the climate change on land is altering species migrations and natural disasters are becoming more frequent. One interesting fact I found about the changes of water is that if the ice caps were to melt because of global warming then the average universal water level would increase 240 more feet. I found that the air has changed a lot because of emissions of cars and industrialization the carbon dioxide has been raised 5%. Too much carbon with not enough plants to take it in forced that carbon into the sky damaging the atmosphere. I found we are already making a lot of changes to slow the process of the warming climate change. California put a cap on Green house emissions. Europe is not cutting emissions because of cost. Which is understandable because of the failing economy but we shouldn’t have to choose money or the earth. Museums are getting involved by holding presentations to education people of the effects of global warming and changes we can make. One interesting fact I found is air over a specific location is typically halfway around the world a week later making climate change truly a global issue, meaning if bad air is coming from one place it will travel and pollute other parts of the world.
I didn’t find a lot about cancer research developments but what I did find interested me greatly. Scientists are now working on tricking cancer cells to help fight tumors, having them intake treated water solution then put these cells back into tumors to directly fight from the inside out. I also found that scientists have discovered that some viruses can cause cancer so they treat the virus early to prevent the cancer from forming. A down side I found that defeats the purpose of creating these vaccines is they are so expensive that the people who need it most can’t afford the treatment. An interesting fact that I found was that high consumptions of caffeine increases breast cancer risk. As well as the nicotine from second hand smoke may also initiate breast cancer, although these are just observations that scientists are now noticing but nothing is proven or absolute.
I found a lot of opinions about the pros and cons of social networks. The pros of social networks are they connect entireties of people from around the world to world disasters and crisis. They can fuel education, collaboration and the boost collective action. They are used for advertising that can be very effective for businesses. Firms are now using social networks to create media companies online for lectures. The cons state that social networks are just people watching and that nothing productive comes from it. It is time consuming and time wasted. Meeting strangers online is overrated and circles of friends become cliquish and cyber bullying commonly occurs. It is not useful search tool for navigating information and a lot of the times give false information from unreliable sources.
I feel I found a lot of information about all three of my topics and am very interested in all three. This makes it hard for me to chose which I want to research.
